A l’initiative des services culturels de l’Ambassade de France aux Etats-Unis et avec le soutien de la Ford Foundation (États-Unis), la FACE Foundation  met en œuvre un programme visant à encourager la circulation des artistes afro-américains en France et favoriser la présentation de leur travail auprès du public français. Avec l'INHA ils ont décidé de s’associer en vue d’attribuer à partir de 2021 une bourse de recherche dans le domaine de l’art afro-américain. Nommée d’après le peintre Beauford Delaney (1901-1979), cette bourse est destinée aux chercheurs en histoire de l’art, français ou étrangers actifs en France, souhaitant mener aux Etats-Unis une recherche originale sur l’art afro-américain. Les projets de recherche peuvent porter sur les artistes afro-américains sans restriction de période (XIXe-XXIe siècle) et ne doivent pas exclure de les envisager dans le contexte de pratiques artistiques et culturelles mondiales, avec un regard sur les circulations, transferts et zones de contact transnationaux.

La bourse est de $20 000 à utiliser au cours des 12 mois suivant l’annonce de la sélection.

Conditions de candidature  : la bourse s’adresse, sans condition de nationalité, en alternance une année sur deux :

- à des chercheuses et chercheurs en histoire de l’art actifs en France, indépendants ou rattachés à des institutions (universités, musées, écoles d’art, etc.), titulaires d’un doctorat ou d’une expérience professionnelle équivalente, à l’exclusion de citoyens états-uniens ayant effectué leurs études aux États-Unis.

- à des étudiantes et étudiants, en train d’achever leur master ou déjà inscrits en doctorat dans une université française, ou à des professionnelles et professionnels junior (moins de 35 ans) actifs en France, à l’exclusion de citoyens états-uniens ayant effectué leurs études aux États-Unis.

Beauford Delaney - Villa Albertine Research Grant

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US, in partnership with FACE Foundation, and with support from the Ford Foundation, and in collaboration with the INHA, have launched in 2021 the Beauford Delaney- Villa Albertine Research Grant, which funds travel and other expenses related to research projects on African American art undertaken by France-based academics and scholars. 

The new program is inscribed within the partner institutions’ broader initiative to promote African American artists in France, and its goal is to explore, and lead to a better understanding of, the practices of artists whose work has been historically underrepresented in art history, as well as to highlight these artists’ individuality and their relationship with the complex global art historical landscape.

Named after the famous American painter Beauford Delaney (1901-1979), this grant is designed for art historians, either French or international, who are working in France and wish to conduct original research on African American art.

The research projects can focus on any African American artists who are living/lived in the 19th to 21st centuries and should consider the artists in the context of the global artistic and cultural practices of the time, taking into account transnational circulation, transfer and contact zones.

The laureate will receive $20,000 in funding to be used over the 12 months following the announcement of the winner.

Elibigility

This grant is open to applicants of any nationality. It will be awarded to a member of one of two groups, alternating annually:

- to an applicant who meets the following criteria: Art historians working in France, independent or affiliated with institutions (universities, museums, schools of art, etc.), holding a doctorate or an equivalent professional experience, excluding United States citizens who have completed their studies in the US.

- to an applicant who meets these criteria: Art History students who are pursuing a Master’s degree or are enrolled in a doctoral program at a French university, or professionals working in France, excluding United States citizens having completed their studies in the US.

Application file (in French or English) : letter of motivation, curriculum vitae; detailed research plans (6 pages maximum) in both French and English, bibliography indicating any sources to consult.
