Avec le soutien de la Ford Foundation (États-Unis), la Villa Albertine et l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art (Paris) s’associent pour proposer une bourse de recherche destinée aux chercheurs et chercheuses en histoire de l’art, français ou étrangers actifs en France, souhaitant mener aux États-Unis une recherche originale sur les artistes afro-descendants dont la trajectoire les a conduits à séjourner, travailler, produire aux Etats-Unis ou dans les Amériques plus largement.
Nommée d’après le peintre Beauford Delaney (1901-1979), cette bourse accueille des projets de recherche qui peuvent porter sur les artistes afro-descendants sans restriction de période (XIXe-XXIe siècle) et de nationalité. Ils ne doivent pas exclure de les envisager dans le contexte de pratiques artistiques et culturelles mondiales, avec un regard sur les circulations, transferts et zones de contact transnationaux. Il s’agit en effet et avant tout de comprendre la pratique d’artistes peu, voire pas, étudiés dans leurs singularités plurielles et dans leur rapport à une histoire de l’art complexe et globale. La bourse est exclusivement destinée à permettre des recherches aux États-Unis, quelles qu’en soient les modalités.
Cette bourse s’inscrit dans la programmation plus large de la Villa Albertine qui vise par ailleurs à favoriser les recherches sur le travail des artistes afro-descendants et leur reconnaissance publique. Par ailleurs, l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art a développé depuis plusieurs années des travaux sur les enjeux théoriques d’une histoire de l’art mondialisée et la mise au jour de corpus la concernant.
Caractéristiques de la bourse
La bourse de recherche Beauford Delaney - Villa Albertine est destinée à financer un lauréat ou une lauréate par an.
Le lauréat ou la lauréate recevra une bourse de $20 000 qu’il ou elle devra utiliser au cours de l’année 2024, notamment pour se rendre sur le terrain, c’est-à-dire pour étudier des fonds d’archives, des fonds documentaires, des œuvres et pour rencontrer des artistes vivants, des commissaires, historiennes et historiens de l’art, des collectionneuses et collectionneurs, etc., aux États-Unis. Il ou elle s’engage à livrer à l’issue ou au cours de l’année de bourse une production tangible (article, chapitre d’ouvrage, exposition, livre, thèse de doctorat) et à exposer leur projet puis le résultat de sa recherche à l’invitation des institutions qui le financent (conférence, débat, entretien…). Le lauréat ou la lauréate sera intégré(e) au programme de résidences de la Villa Albertine aux États-Unis au cours de l’année 2024.
Le cas échéant, l’INHA accueillera la boursière ou le boursier en tant que chercheuse accueillie ou chercheur accueilli selon les règles en vigueur au sein de son institut et le cas échéant selon un calendrier prédéfini dans le contrat de bourse émis entre le lauréat ou la lauréate et l’INHA.
Il s’agit d’une bourse et non d’un contrat de travail. La bourse n’est pas exclusive d’autres sources de revenus. Le lauréat ou la lauréate s’engage à présenter un rapport de recherche au plus tard douze mois après l’obtention de la bourse pour expliquer l’utilisation des fonds alloués. Les institutions se réservent le droit de demander un remboursement partiel ou total si le projet annoncé n’a pas pu être réalisé.
Les candidats devront respecter les règlementations en vigueur pour entrer sur le territoire américain.
Conditions de candidature
Cette bourse s’adresse, sans condition de nationalité, aux chercheuses et chercheurs confirmés ou en début de carrière (doctorat, post-doctorat). L’appel s’adresse ainsi aux chercheuses et chercheurs en histoire de l’art actifs en France, indépendants ou rattachés à des institutions (universités, musées, écoles d’art, etc.), en préparation ou titulaires d’un doctorat ou d’une expérience professionnelle équivalente, à l’exclusion de citoyens états-uniens ayant effectué leurs études aux États-Unis.
Composition du dossier de candidature
Le dossier de candidature (en français et en anglais) comprendra :
1. Une lettre de candidature adressée au directeur général de l’INHA et à la directrice des études et de la recherche de l’INHA ;
2. Un curriculum vitae ;
3. Un programme de travail détaillé (6 pages maximum) en langue française et anglaise comprenant une description synthétique du projet, de l'état de l'art, de la méthodologie et de l'objectif poursuivi (rédaction d'un livre, d'une thèse, d'un article, etc.), ainsi qu’un calendrier provisoire des séjours de recherche prévus (indication précise des sources, fonds, œuvres à voir, artistes et personnalités à rencontrer, etc.) et une indication du budget nécessaire (en US $) pour les mener à bien. Une bibliographie avec indication des sources à consulter complètera ce dossier ;
Les dossiers de candidature pour la sélection 2024 seront déposés en ligne sur la plateforme de l’INHA ICI avant le 15 septembre 2023 à 23h59, heure de Paris .
Seules les candidatures déposées en ligne sur la plateforme de l’INHA seront prises en compte.
Sélection
Les candidats seront sélectionnés sur dossier.
Le jury de sélection des candidats sera composé du directeur général de l’INHA et de la directrice du département des études et de la recherche de l’INHA, d’un.e représentant.e de la Villa Albertine, ainsi que de deux personnalités qualifiées, dont une ou un spécialiste de l’art africain et/ou afro-américain. Le jury se réunit une fois par an pour désigner la candidature lauréate. Les critères de sélection retenus pour l’évaluation des candidatures seront l’excellence et la pertinence du projet.

Beauford Delaney - Villa Albertine Research Grant
Villa Albertine and the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art (INHA- French National Institute of Art History),France’s premier art history institution s created in 2001 with the mission of supporting academic research and international cooperation in the realm of art, are partnering to offer the Beauford Delany Research Grant with the support of the Ford Foundation (United States). This grant is intended for French or France-based researchers in art history, who wish to conduct original research in the United States on Afro-descendant artists whose journey led them to stay, work, and create in the United States or in the broader Americas.
Named after the painter Beauford Delaney (1901-1979), this grant is open to research projects focusing on Afro-descendant artists, regardless of time period (19th- 21st centuries) or nationality. Projects must consider Afro-descendant artists in the context of global artistic and cultural practices, with a focus on transnational circulations, transfers, and contact zones. The main goal of the grant is to understand the practices of understudied artists in terms of their singularities and their relationship to a complex, global art history. The grant is intended exclusively for research in the United States, regardless of the terms and conditions.
This grant is part of Villa Albertine's larger residency program, which notably aims to promote research into the work of Afro-descendant artists and their public recognition. For several years now, the Institut National d’Histoire de l’Art has been working on the theoretical challenges of a globalized art history and on uncovering relevant related corpus.
Grant Details
The Beauford Delaney Research Grant will be awarded to one recipient per year.
The winner will receive $20,000to be used in 2024 for fieldwork, i.e. to study archives, document collections, and works of art, and to meet with living artists, curators, art historians, collectors, etc., in the United States. During the duration of the grant or at the end, recipients should produce a tangible work (e.g. an article, book chapter, exhibition, book, doctoral thesis) and present their project and the results of their research at the invitation of the funding institutions in any format (conference, debate, interview, etc.). The winner will be included in Villa Albertine’s program in the United States during the 2024 season.
This grant provides funding for research but is neither an employment contract nor exclusive of other sources of income. Successful candidates must submit a research report no later than twelve months after receiving the grant, outlining the use of the allocated funds. The funding institutions reserve the right to request partial or total reimbursement if the proposed project cannot be carried out.
Applicants must comply with all applicable regulations to enter the United States.
Applicant Eligibility
This grant is open to art history researchers of all nationalities at any stage of their career, from PhD students to experts in the field. The call for applications is open to art history researchers active in France, whether independent or affiliated with institutions (universities, museums, art schools, etc.), who will or have received a PhD or equivalent professional experience. American citizens, who have completed their studies in the U.S. are not eligible to apply.
Application Details
The application file (in French or English) must include:
1. A letter of motivation addressed to the Executive Director of the INHA and to the Director of the Department for Studies and Research of the INHA;
2. A resume;
3. A detailed research plan (6 pages maximum) in both French and English, including a brief description of the project, of the state of the art, of the methodology, and of the goal of the research project (publication of a book, a thesis, an article, etc.), as well as a provisional timeline for the planned research visits (detailed indication of sources, collections, artworks to investigate, artists and other professionals to meet, etc.), and an estimate of the required budget (in USD) to carry out the research . A bibliography indicating any sources to consult will complete this file.

Selection
Applicants will be selected on the basis the strength of their application.
The selection jury will include the Executive Director and the Director of the Department of Research and Studies at the INHA, a representative from the FACE Foundation or the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US, and two qualified individuals, including an expert in African and/or African-American art. The jury will meet once a year to select the winner. Candidates will primarily be evaluated based onEthe merit and relevance of their projects.
