Alka Patel est professeur au département d'histoire de l'art et au programme de doctorat en études visuelles de l'université de Californie, Irvine. Les recherches d’Alka Patel se sont concentrées sur l'Asie du Sud et ses connexions avec l'Iran et l'Asie centrale, y compris les réseaux terrestres et maritimes de l'océan Indien. Sa première monographie s'intitule Building Communities in Gujarat : Architecture and Society during the Twelfth-Fourteenth Centuries (Brill 2004) ; et la plus récente est Iran to India : the Shansabanis of Afghanistan, c. 1145-1190 CE (2022), qui est le premier de deux volumes traitant de cet empire confédéré qui a eu des conséquences profondes pour l'Asie du Sud et l'Asie centrale. Alka Patel is Professor in the Department of Art History and in the PhD Program for Visual Studies at the University of California, Irvine. Professor Patel’s research has focused on South Asia and its connections with Iran and Central Asia, including overland and Indian Ocean maritime networks. Her first monograph was Building Communities in Gujarat: Architecture and Society during the Twelfth-Fourteenth Centuries (Brill 2004); and the most recent is Iran to India: the Shansabanis of Afghanistan, c. 1145-1190 CE (2022), which is the first of two volumes treating this confederate empire that was profoundly consequential for South and Central Asia. Professor Patel strongly believes in collaborations, creating special issues of journals such as Ars Orientalis (vol. 34) and Archives of Asian Art (vol. 59); and multi-author volumes such as India and Iran in the Longue Durée (Jordan Center/Brill, 2017), co-edited with ancient Iranist Touraj Daryaee. A recent project with the Getty Research Institute resulted in the trilingual Dari-English-Pashtu At the Crossroads: Qandahar in Images and Empires (2022), which was to accompany an exhibition of nineteenth-century photographs traveling to the Afghan cities of Qandahar, Kabul, and Herat. During her INHA residency, Professor Patel will be composing Building the Indo-Persian World (tentative title), the second volume of her Shansabanis project mentioned above.
